The San Diego Zoo will have an all-day celebration, beginning at 10 am until approximately 5 pm in which the San Pasqual Band of Mission Indians will host a celebration of the Kumeyaay people for, as the zoo mentions, “their commitment to wildlife and their culture.”

This activity will begin with a blessing ceremony, the history of creation will be told, there will be a culinary offer, and an exhibition of indigenous handicrafts. In addition, there will be a basket weaving area, bird singing groups, a concert by Paul Cannon and trekking tours.

San Diego State University has a subdivision called Native Resource Center. From this unit they organized a week in which they will map the land to recognize the indigenous territories of the Kumyaay, they will also organize reading clubs and discussions that will allow to know and listen about the experiences of this community.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day Celebration

At Highline College there will be a series of talks on October 10 from 9 am to 12 pm which will be the celebration of Indigenous Peoples Day. These discussions will begin with Dr Denise Bill, who will speak about the Muckleshoot tribe, of which she is a member.

Afterwards, Preston Singletary will talk about his work as a glass artisan and what he has learned from native artists (Maori, Hawaiian, Aboriginal Australians); finally, there will be a panel on Indigenizing the campus: creating sustainable processes and indigenizing the institutional panel.

National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center Webinar
