The San Diego Padres had a dream path to this Championship Series, leaving great teams like the Mets and Dodgers in their wake, but the Phillies are proving to be a pretty tough opponent for them after losing 2-4 yesterday in the first game of the series at Citizens Ball Park.
Joe Musgrove, their starter in that game, was responsible for all four runs, and Mike Clevinger will look to improve on his teammate’s performance yesterday. However, after allowing four runs, six hits and two walks in just 2.2 innings in his previous postseason appearance against the Dodgers, San Diego may once again see its starter get into trouble.
Starting Pitcher: Mike Clevinger (7-7, 4.33 ERA, 1.20 WHIP)
Injured: Drew Pomeranz (elbow), Austin Adams (forearm).
Betting on the Philadelphia Phillies
- Season record: 87-75
- Regular season vs Padres: 4-3
- Runline of Unibet: [Por definir]
- Moneyline of Unibet: [Por definir]
- Over/Under from Unibet (6.5): [Por definir]
The Phillies’ path to this stage has been similar to that of their opponents, as they left the Central and East Division champion Cardinals and Braves, respectively, on its wake. Now, they appear on track to make their first World Series appearance since 2009 if they can take advantage of their home field advantage in the next two games.
Their fans won’t know what to expect from this matchup having young Bailey Falter as the starter, though, as his last appearance on the mound was as an “opener,”; however, three of his four starts prior to that saw the pitcher be on the mound for a minimum of 4.0 innings and allow one run or less.
Starting Pitcher: Bailey Falter (6-4, 3.90 ERA, 1.20 WHIP)
Injured: Corey Knebel (shoulder), Kent Emmanuel (shoulder), Damon Jones (shoulder), Simon Muzziotti (kneecap), James McArthur (elbow).
JefeBet Prediction
The Padres reliever did a good enough job yesterday to make amends for the damage done by Musgrove after his performance, and he may again have a lot of work to do today with Mike Clevinger on the mound.
Clevinger’s poor performance in his last opening was no surprise, as his performance since September has been pitiful. He has allowed four or more runs in five of seven appearances, and today he will have to face a Philadelphia lineup that has been on fire this postseason.
Likewise, Bailey Falter is a question mark as it’s not known what role he will have or how well he will perform against an opponent of the Padres’ quality, who will surely be able to score a run or two against him and the Phillies’ bullpen.
Prediction: Over (SD 3 – PHI 6)
