Beer sponsorship in the world of sports
Budweiser
For starters, there’s Budweiser, the “mother” beer of Bud Light. It was created 146 years ago, in 1876 in Missouri, United States. It is an American pale lager beer produced by Anheuser-Busch. This beverage has become one of the best-selling beers in the United States.
Initially, it was sold only in bottles, but in an attempt to re-stimulate interest in its beer after the repeal of Prohibition, Budweiser began canning its beer in 1936. This new packaging led to an increase in sales that lasted until the outbreak of World War II in 1939.
It currently sponsors the FIFA World Cup, with whom it initially signed a contract in 2010.
Bud Light
Second is Bud Light, which was introduced in 1982 as Budweiser Light, and known exclusively as Bud Light in late 1984, is Budweiser’s flagship light beer. From 1993 to 1998, Bud Light aired 30-second commercials featuring Rob and Laura from the CBS series The Dick Van Dyke Show.
It currently has contracts with MLB and the NFL and it has great coverage in the United States and is one of the beers most often seen in sponsorships at sporting events.
Heineken
In 1873, Gerard Heineken started his small family brewery in the city center of Amsterdam. The brewery grew as fast as Amsterdam did, and Gerard’s dedication to quality made it an instant success. This lager beer has 5% alcohol. Its logo with the red star has become recognizable around the world. For this reason, it is also one of the most recognized sponsors in the sport. For example, it sponsors the Rugby Champions Cup.
Heineken is also a sponsor of Formula 1, the world’s largest and most important motor racing circuit group.
Corona
Finally, Corona sponsors the MLB. Corona is a brand of beer produced by the Mexican brewery Cervecería Modelo and owned by the Belgian company AB InBev. It is the best-selling brand of imported beer in the United States. It is often served with a slice of lemon in the neck of the bottle to add acidity and flavor.
