Get To Know the Qatar 2022 Controversies in the First Week of the World Cup

Harry Kane Announced That He Would Wear the LGBTQI+ Flag Armband

Just before England’s first World Cup opener against Iran, England captain Harry Kane announced that he would be willing to be fined to wear the captain’s armband with the LGBTQI+ pride flag on it. As it is known, Qatar is a country where it is illegal to self-proclaim as gay, so this decision was quite controversial.

However, he did not wear it, changing it at the last minute to a “No Discrimination” because of the sanction policies that FIFA might have, which were not really predictable. Therefore, Kane along with the captains of other teams decided not to wear the “One love” armband.

Argentine Fans Brought Alcohol Into the Stadium

Many Latin Americans have been involved in jocular and dangerous situations in Qatar, clearly breaking the rules of this country. In this case, a couple of Argentines admitted in a live interview that they had brought Fernet into the stadium where the match against Saudi Arabia was played. Despite this, they did not give details of what strategy they had for carrying the alcoholic beverage.

Discussion Between Qatar and Ecuador Fans

On Sunday, November 20, Qatar vs Ecuador faced each other for the opening match of the World Cup, however, in the stands this match got heated with an argument with offensive gestures and shouting between a Qatari and an Ecuadorian fan. In fact, the argument was so loud that they later uploaded a video apologizing and saying that the two were friends and that no major problems had resulted.

Remember that public discussions are frowned upon in the host country and can result in severe repercussions, including criminal prosecution.

VAR Disallows Three Goals to Argentina

Qatar 2022 controversies in the first week of the World Cup

This is probably the biggest controversy of the World Cup so far. The first goal disallowed was to Lionel Messi in the 22nd minute for being offside, clearly overtaking the last Saudi player. The second at the 26th minute when Lautaro Martínez scored what would be the second goal for Argentina, which was disallowed by the VAR with a dubious criterion that has been countered and analyzed by many, as it was apparently not out of place.

Finally, Lautaro Martínez scored again, but his goal was disallowed for the same reason. This came as a complete surprise to the team and its fans.

Osman Bakari, Ghanaian Player, Copies Cristiano Ronaldo’s Celebration

Finally, in Portugal’s match against Ghana, Osman Bakari copied the celebration of Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, who was visibly upset because it came out very badly. However, CR7’s team won without much difficulty against the African team.
