Independent program Chicago State is not going to be part of the party in March in the NCAA tournament. The Cougars simply just don’t have the resume that would turn the heads of the selection committee even for just a couple of seconds.
However, they can send shockwaves still across the nation if somehow they find a way to beat Gonzaga in Spokane this week. That is highly unlikely, but a spread isn’t such an impossibility for Chicago State, relatively speaking.
For one, Chicago State has covered the spread in seven of its last eight games in which the Cougars are a road underdog by at least 10 points, dating back to 2022. It’s also worth mentioning that they lost by “only” 14 points to the Marquette Golden Eagles last November on the road for a cover as an underdog by nearly 30 points.

Gonzaga ended conference play with a resounding 77-68 win at home last Saturday over the Saint Mary’s Gaels to earn a share of the West Coast Conference title. The Bulldogs were beaten early in February by Saint Mary’s, so that victory over the weekend must have tasted incredibly sweet for Drew Timme and the Bulldogs.
Speaking of Timme, the Gonzaga big man should have nearly whatever he wants this Wednesday against a lightweight like Chicago State. On the season, the Cougars are a sub-290 team in scoring offense and a sub-200 team in scoring defense. Conversely, the Bulldogs are No. 1 nationally with 86.3 points per game and third in the WCC in adjusted defensive efficiency (105.4). Timme leads the Bulldogs with 21.2 PPG.
