Betting on the Michigan State Spartans
- Regular Season Record: 20-12
Tom Izzo has his Spartans marching into the second round after taking care of business in the first round with a 72-62 win over the USC Trojans. That was an emphatic victory by Michigan State, which was favored by only around 2.5 points to win that contest.
Joey Hauser led the way for Michigan State with 17 points on the strength of 4/6 shooting from behind the arc. Michigan State won the game more because of its defense, as it had seven steals and three blocks, forced 11 turnovers, and limited USC to just 41.4 FG%. Entering the postseason, Michigan State was allowing only 67.4 points per game.
The Spartans didn’t shoot the ball, particularly well – as a team – from deep in the first round, but do note that they were third nationally in the regular season with a 39.4 3FG%.
Betting on the Marquette Golden Eagles
- Regular Season Record: 29-6
Marquette also avoided stepping on a trap in the first round, with the Golden Eagles blowing out the Vermont Catamounts, 78-61. The Golden Eagles’ scary offense was on full display in that game, with four starters scoring at least 10 points each. However, Marquette star Tyler Kolek struggled from the field and only made eight points.
The reigning Big East Player of the Year also has a thumb injury, but it’s believed to be something that isn’t serious enough to keep him out of this upcoming date with Michigan State. Marquette also has four players who averaged at least 11.0 points in the regular season, led by Kam Jones (15.1 PPG), who also showed the way for the Golden Eagles in the first round with 19 points.
Jones and the Golden Eagles were No. 1 in the Big East with a 114.8 points per 100 possessions adjusted and also tops with a 56.1 eFG% in conference play.
JefeBet Prediction
We’re not really sure how okay Tyler Kolek is, but the Golden Eagles are deep enough to keep it going offensively. Marquette is going to come away with a win in the second round.
Prediction: Marquette wins, 75-71.
