Notes about the Experts’ Analysis

  • What Kim Mulkey has accomplished this season as head coach of the Tigers is nothing short of admirable. She had a total of nine new players to handle in the 2022-23 college basketball season, but here the Tigers are, just a win away from dancing their way to the national title game. Defense has been a strength of LSU, particularly in the NCAA tournament, with each team the Tigers have faced in in the tourney shooting no better than 50% from the field.
  • One thing to know about Virginia Tech is that it is being powered by a terrific combo of senior center Elizabeth Kitley and junior Georgia Amoore. Kitley is the towering 6-6 inside operator of the Hokies, who is also a two-time ACC Player of the Year. She is averaging 18.2 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. Amoore, on the other hand, stands just 5-6 but he plays bigger than his size, averaging 16.3 points, 5.0 assists, and 3.0 rebounds per contest.
  • There’s Caitlin Clark and then there are the rest. Clark is playing at an unbelievable level this season. She is the engine that drives the high-powered offense of the Hawkeyes, who are the top-scoring team in the nation. Iowa is averaging 87.6 points per game and is also shooting 51.1 percent from the field and 37.9 percent from behind the arc. Clark and the Hawkeyes’ ability to space the floor with their shooting and her passing acumen makes Iowa so hard to stop. Clark is averaging 27.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 8.6 assists per game.
  • South Carolina might just have the answer to the Hawkeyes’ attack: their defense. The Gamecocks, the preseason No. 1 team, are third in the nation with teams scoring just 51.1 points per game against them.
  • South Carolina is tough to beat inside because of its tenacious in-your-face defense that is averaging 8.9 blocks per game and limits opponents to only 31.78 percent shooting from the field. But the Gamecocks can also punish teams with their offense, as they are scoring 80.5 points per game on 51.2 FG%. South Carolina has three players who stand at least 6-4.  It is bannered by Aliyah Boston (13.2 PPG, 9.8 RPG, 1.9 APG) and Zia Cooke (15.1 PPG, 1.9 RPG, 2.0 APG).
