Forte (3/1)
The 3-year-old colt Forte has won all but one of its seven career starts. In its most recent race, Forte proved why it’s one of the top horses to watch at the 2023 Kentucky Derby when it topped the 2023 Florida Derby (Grade 1). In its first non-maiden race, Forte blew the competition away by winning the 2022 Sanford (Grade 3) in Saratoga.
Tapit Trice (5/1)
Trained by Todd Pletcher, Tapit Trice took two races to win its first event. Once it finally did, Tapit Trice has never looked back, having won all of its next three races, including last April’s 2023 Blue Grass Stakes (Grade 1). In its only other grades stakes race to date, Tapit Trice finished first at the 2023 Tampa Bay Derby (Grade 3). Saddling Tapit Trice at Churchill Downs will be Luis Saez, who’s got over a 100 wins in his career.
Angel of Empire (8/1)
Angel of Empire has six starts under its belt. The last time it hit the tracks, Angel of Empire topped the field at the 2023 Arkansas Derby (Grade 1) last April. The Brad Cox-trained 3-year-old colt has shown in all its two graded stakes races so far, including at the 2023 Risen Star (Grade 2.)
Sleepers
Two Phil’s (12/1)
Two Phil’s showed its readiness for the big race at Churchill Downs by dominating the competition at the 2023 Jeff Ruby Steaks (Grade 3 stakes) back in March. It’s the 3-year-old colt’s second graded stakes victory. It has also shown in each of its last four starts, a stretch that included its third-place finish behind Angel of Empire and Sun Thunder at the 2023 Risen Star (Grade 2 stakes).
Mage (15/1)
Trained by Gustavo Delgado, Mage is a lightly raced colt that has only seen action in three races, so far. After winning its very first race at Gulfstream Park last January, it finished fourth at the 2023 Fountain of Youth (Grade 2 stakes) in March and second at the 2023 Florida Derby (Grade 1 stakes) in April when it placed just behind Kentucky Derby favorite Forte.
Dark Horse
King Russell
It took King Russell five races to finally get its first win. But in its first try in a graded stakes race, it finished second at the 2023 Arkansas Derby (Grade 1 stakes), finishing just behind Kentucky Derby top contender Angel of Empire.
Jefebet Prediction
Forte carries its momentum and convincingly wins the 2023 edition of the Kentucky Derby.
Prediction: Forte (odds)
