Betting on the San Diego Padres (-165)
Michael Wacha could see action on the mound for his first start in nearly two weeks. Wacha skipped his last scheduled start because of a minor shoulder issue. He had a decent June, though. In four starts that month, he went 2-1 with a 1.54 ERA across 23.1 innings. In his most recent start, Wacha held the San Francisco Giants to only two runs on four hits with two walks issued in six innings, albeit in a 7-4 road loss.
Regardless of whether Wacha or another guy takes the mound for San Diego for this game, the Padres will rely on their bats to deliver the goods against Cincinnati’s Brandon Williamson, who’s been shaky this season. Williamson has allowed a total of 17 earned runs on 28 hits in his last 24.1 innings on the mound. Williamson can look like free lunch for the likes of Juan Soto and Fernando Tatis Jr, who each had a smoking month of June at the plate.
Starting pitcher: Michael Wacha (7-2, 2.90 ERA)
Betting on the Cincinnati Reds (+140)
As mentioned above, Williamson will get the ball for the Reds for this matchup against San Diego. While he hasn’t been performing at an admirable level for the most part of the 2023 MLB regular season, Williamson will still have the benefit of having to pitch in front of Cincinnati’s home crowd.
He is winless in four starts at home this season but opponents are hitting just .261 against him at Great American Ball Park – lower than his .266 opponents’ batting average in all other parks. Williamson is also getting a healthy dose of run support from the Reds. Among Reds starters with at least 30 innings logged this season, Williamson receives the most runs from Cincinnati per nine innings at 6.28.
Starting pitcher: Brandon Williamson (1-1, 5.82 ERA)
El Jefe’s Prediction on San Diego Padres vs Cincinnati Reds
Cincinnati’s bats will have Williamson’s back here. San Diego’s been so frustrating of late, unlike the Reds, who are still fresh off a fantastic June at the plate.
Prediction:
The Reds win, 7-5.
