Betting on the Los Angeles Angels (+100)
Ohtani is undeniably a mind-numbingly incredible baseball player. When he’s not hitting home runs, he’s striking batters out at a high pace, especially of late. Over his last two starts, Ohtani has recorded 22 strikeouts and allowed only two earned runs on nine hits across 13.1 innings.
In June alone, he went 2-2 with a 3.26 ERA and 37 strikeouts, and he’s clearly in a groove on the mound right now. That’s bad news for the Padres, whose current hitters are just 2-for-13 lifetime against Ohtani. Meanwhile, Mike Moustakas and Anthony Rendon could be the surprise stars for the Angels in this game, as they are a combined 7-for-16 with four home runs all-time against Padres starter Joe Musgrove. Hunter Renfroe is also 2-for-7 with a home run and three RBIs against Musgrove.
Starting pitcher: Shohei Ohtani (7-3, 3.02 ERA)
Betting on the San Diego Padres (-120)
While most eyes will be on Ohtani in this matchup, people should not forget about Musgrove, too, The 30-year-old right-hander has not allowed more than three earned runs in six of his last seven starts, while pitching no shorter than 5.0 innings in those contests. Musgrove even had a better June than Ohtani on the mound, as he went 4-0 with a 2.25 ERA across six starts that month.
Over his last three starts, Musgrove put together a 2-0 record with a 2.37 ERA. Offensively, the Padres can feel encouraged by the fact that Ohtani owns a mediocre 4.03 ERA in road starts this season. Ohtani will be put to the test by stars Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, and Juan Soto, who all have not faced the 28-year-old pitcher before.
Starting pitcher: Joe Musgrove (6-2, 3.80 ERA)
El Jefe’s Prediction on Los Angeles Angels vs San Diego Padres
It’s easy to get blinded by Ohtani’s greatness this season, but the Padres aren’t too shabby either whenever they have Musgrove pitching. Going to go with the Padres in this game.
Prediction:
The Padres win, 4-2.
