Betting on the Pittsburgh Pirates (+230)
The Pirates will turn to the seemingly ageless Rich Hill this Tuesday against San Diego. Hill hasn’t exactly been among the elite this season, but the 43-year-old lefty hasn’t been absolutely bad on the mound either.
He has also faced the Padres once this season, which he and the Pirates ended up winning, thanks in large part to the team’s offense. Hill allowed four earned runs on nine hits with two walks issued in 6.0 innings of a 9-4 victory over the Padres late last June at home. Among qualified Pirates starters, Hill enjoys the most run support per nine innings with an average of 6.32.
Starting pitcher: Rich Hill (7-9, 4.84 ERA)
Betting on the San Diego Padres (-275)
Although Snell hasn’t picked up in two straight starts, he remains one of the most dependable starters for the Padres. In his last start, he allowed just an earned run on five hits with four strikeouts in 5.0 innings of a 4-0 road loss to the Toronto Blue Jays last Thursday.
Snell issued seven free passes to the Blue Jays but also extended his streak of starts of two earned runs or fewer to 11 – that stretch includes his performance in a 7-1 loss to the Pirates on June 28 in which he surrendered just two earned runs on three hits in six innings before the Padres’ bullpen collapsed. Snell also carries a strong 2.98 ERA in games started at Petco Park this season.
Starting pitcher: Blake Snell (6-8, 2.67 ERA)
El Jefe’s Prediction on Pittsburgh Pirates vs San Diego Padres
Snell continues his streak of two or fewer runs allowed, while the Padres’ bats light up Hill. Taking the Padres to win.
Prediction:
The Padres win, 5-2.
