Betting on the Pittsburgh Pirates (+170)
Coming off a loss, the Pirates will turn to Johan Oviedo to start the series finale against San Diego. It would take a lot from Pittsburgh fans to put complete trust in Oviedo, considering that that Pirates have gone winless in all of his last eight appearances, dating back to June plus the fact that he is coming off an especially bad outing.
In his last start, Oviedo allowed five earned runs on three hits in four innings of an 8-5 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on the road last Friday. However, the Pirates’ offense can inspire more hope. Henry Davis has hit .325 with three home runs and five RBIs in his last 11 games, while Carlos Santa has two homers and seven RBIs plus a .273 batting average in the last six games.
Starting pitcher: Johan Oviedo (3-11, 4.77 ERA)
Betting on the San Diego Padres (-200)
After snapping a two-game losing skid, the Padres will look to win this series outright when they give the ball to Seth Lugo. In his most recent start, Lugo allowed just two earned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts in 6.0 innings of action during a 5-4 victory road win over the Detroit Tigers last Friday. The Padres have won in two of his last three starts after losing in all of his three starts back in June. He has a decent 3.09 ERA with a win in his last four starts as well.
Offensively, the Padres will lean on the likes of Fernando Tatis Jr and Manny Machado to carry the load, especially if Juan Soto gets ultimately rested by San Diego, which is tied for seventh-most runs in total in the big leagues since the MLB All-Star break.
