Betting on the Texas Rangers (+160)
The Rangers are still sitting atop the American League West division with a 60-43 record. They are also above .500 in road games this season with a 26-23 record in games played away from Arlington.
On the mound for Texas in this series opener against the Padres is Dane Dunning, who is looking to recover from a poor start, as he allowed five earned runs on seven hits in just three innings of a 16-3 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers last Saturday. Prior to that, though, Dunning had allowed two or fewer earned runs in five of six starts. He also does carry an encouraging 3-2 record and 2.79 ERA in 11 appearances on the road this season, including seven starts. There’s also the Rangers’ offense that has the most runs scored (605) by a mile, so far this season.
Starting pitcher: Dane Dunning (8-3, 3.18 ERA)
Betting on the San Diego Padres (-190)
The Padres aren’t looking very good at the moment. They are coming off a series loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates at home, losing two of three games, including the finale last Wedneseday to the tune of a 3-2 score. San Diego is also losers in three of its last four games.
The good news for the Padres is that they will have Joe Musgrove on the mound this Friday. Musgrove is 3-1 with a 1.80 ERA in four starts this July. He picked up a loss in his last start, but still looked decent in that contest, allowing three earned runs on seven hits with six strikeouts in six innings of a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Detroit Tigers last Sunday at Comerica Park. The Padres have won all of Musgrove’s last five starts at Petco Park, where he is also 5-1 with a 3.40 ERA in nine total appearances.
Starting pitcher: Joe Musgrove (9-3, 3.25 ERA)
