There are seven Latin American World Cup teams for the 2022 World Cup. Qatar 2022 World Cup and each one achieved their qualification in different ways; some had the easy path and others went through difficult paths but in the end they achieved their goal. The World Cup is still seven months away, so we invite you to have fun with this comparison between the teams and the food.

What food would the CONCACAF and CONMEBOL World Cup teams be?

1.- Brazil

The Brazilian national team qualified for Qatar 2022, being the first place in the overall table of Conmebol. It was apparently a smooth qualification as it did not lose any of the 17 matches they faced.

Thinking of a food to compare to this soccer team was not an easy task, as each region of Brazil has different dishes to choose from, but we consider that the stew that most closely resembles it is the ‘Moqueca.’

Moqueca is a Carioca food made from fish or shrimp, to which coconut milk, tomato, onion and garlic are added. When the dish is ready, it has a yellow color, very similar to the jersey worn by the Brazilian national team.

2.- Argentina

Argentina is also one of the World Cup teams, after qualifying in second place in Conmebol. The team is enjoying great success, accumulating 31 unbeaten games and if we have to compare them to a meal, it will clearly be the traditional ‘asado’ (barbecue).

Just as one chooses the meat to put on the grill, so has coach Lionel Scaloni selected the best elements to form his team. So far, it has satisfied everyone as well as a great Argentine ‘asado’ would.

3.- Uruguay

The team had to do everything perfect in the final stretch of the qualifiers to be part of the Latin American World Cup teams in Qatar 2022. They won their last four games, after having been inconsistent.

For the Uruguayan people, soccer is an important topic, perhaps as important as Capeletis for lunch on Sundays.

Capeletis are an entirely Uruguayan pasta filled with meat and covered with a a delicious sauce.

4.- Ecuador

Ecuador managed to be one of the Latin American World Cup teams despite their ups and downs throughout the qualifying process. Coach Gustavo Alfaro managed to pull the potatoes out of the fire when needed using various ingredients. And since potatoes have already been mentioned, the comparison of this selection is with Llapingachos, a dish based on that ingredient.

Potatoes, lard, ‘achiote’, salt, pepper and cheese are enough to make Llapingachos, but you can always add something else.

5.- Canada

Canada will return to a World Cup after 36 years, having last been a World Cup team at the Mexico ’86 World Cup. After so much bitterness and so many attempts, the Canadian team tasted the sweetness of victory, something like tasting the maple syrup that is produced there.

And we make this comparison because this round of qualifying was really too sweet for the Maple Leaves, as they finished in first place, being the first in CONCACAF to get a direct ticket to Qatar.

6.- Mexico

The Mexican National Team had several setbacks in this qualifying stage for the World Cup, but they managed to get back on track. If you have to compare them to a typical Mexican food, I would say they are similar to Pozole.

Pozole is a Mexican dish made from corn kernels and pork. It can be green, white or red, like the colors of the Mexican flag. It is a heavy meal that not everyone likes, but in the end it fulfills its purpose, which is to nourish. Despite not filling the fans’ eyes, the fact of being one of the World Cup teams is enough reason to feel that they have accomplished their goal.

7.- United States

The Stars and Stripes have become one of the CONCACAF World Cup teams for Qatar 2022. It did so in a quiet manner, and at times was even the best team in the area. Their main success was to take advantage of their home games to prevent their rivals from stealing points from them. This was as simple as getting ready and eating a hotdog, as they did not lose any of their seven home games.

In this comparison, the fans were the bread, the sausage was the team and the rest of the ingredients were the goals that were being added.
