Melvin Gordon is not going anywhere, despite rumors of his departure from the Broncos, as the franchise finally re-signed the running back.

The bargaining between Melvin Gordon and the Denver Broncos is over. Journalist Jordan Schultz revealed that the running back will remain with the franchise for one more year under a $5 million contract. The analyst believes this is good news for Denver’s team environment, but especially for the quarterback Russell Wilson who has just been added and will be able to count on Melvin Gordon to send his passes.

It is important to mention that Russell Wilson and Melvin Gordon were teammates at the University of Wisconsin in 2011, so they have a good relationship and know each other on the court. It’s possible that this has influenced Gordon’s re-signing.

The last few days had been a nervous time for the Broncos, as they did not know what would happen with the running back, but even though there was no certainty of his continuity, everyone was optimistic because it was known that both the team and the player were in talks to reach an agreement.

Mike Klis of 9News reported on his Twitter account that Melvin Gordon will travel to Denver for his physical exam and will later sign the contract. He clarified that, while the arrangement is stated to be for $5 million, the base income is worth $2.5 million, but that incentives would give him the initial sum.

Melvin Gordon already has been with Denver for two years

Melvin Gordon came to the Broncos in 2020 after spending five seasons with the Chargers. His first contract with the Denver franchise was for two years and $16 million. He has started 26 games since his arrival, despite sharing playing time with Javonte Williams last season.

Gordon recorded 203 carries for 918 yards and eight touchdowns in his 16 appearances in the 2021 season.

The Denver Broncos’ decision to extend Melvin Gordon’s contract before the start of the 2022 NFL Draft is good news because they now know they won’t have to give up a draft pick to add a running back since they appear to be set at that position.

In addition, the Denver Broncos will not be able to pick during the First Round, as their first available selection is #64 in the second round and they will have to analyze very well which positions they need to reinforce urgently in order to make good use of it.
