With the no-hitter launched by Reid Detmers on Tuesday against the Tampa Bay Rays, now there are 25 rookies in the history of Major League Baseball to get a game like this. Here, we bring you five of the most recent rookies to throw a no-hitter in MLB.

5.- Aníbal Sánchez (2006)

Aníbal Sanchez was one of the last rookies to throw a no-hitter, doing it against the Arizona Rattlers on September 6, 2006, while still wearing the Florida Marlins uniform. The Venezuelan became the second pitcher born in that country to throw a no-hitter and the fourth to do so within the organization, first as a rookie. At 22 years of age, Sanchez had struck out six opponents, given away four tickets and thrown 103 pitches.

4.- Clay Buchholz (2007)

In a Boston Red Sox uniform, a young Clay Buchholz made history by being the first rookie to throw a no-hitter in the team’s long history. The 22-year-old achieved the feat on September 1, 2007, in what was only his second major league start, against the Baltimore Orioles. According to Elias Sports Bureau, his 115 pitches, nine strikeouts, three walks, and a balk made him the 17th pitcher in Boston history to throw a no-hitter and the third in MLB history, since 1900, to do so in his first or second start.

3.- Chris Heston (2015)

At 26 years of age and with 13 starts in the Major League, Chris Heston had his day of fame on June 9, 2015, when with 111 pitches he dominated the New York Mets and became the first rookie pitcher in Giants history to throw a no-hitter. The right-hander fanned 11 opponents, and only three balls kept him away from a perfect game. Heston became the 16th pitcher in the organization’s 103-year history to throw a no-hitter, as well as the last to do it.

2.- Tyler Gilbert (2021)

Tyler Gilbert‘s no-hitter is not only on our rookie list, but it is also unique in that he is only the fourth pitcher in history to throw a no-hitter in his first major league start, and only the second since 1900. The left-handed player achieved the feat with the Arizona Rattlers on August 14, 2021, by defeating the San Diego Padres: a team to which he conceded only three tickets, all of them to Tommy Pham. Gilbert became the third pitcher with such a game in the organization’s history and the first to pitch it as a home run.

1.- Reid Detmers (2022)

Reid Detmers’ no hitter is the latest on our list, as he achieved it on Tuesday, May 10, 2022. The Anaheim Angels’ right-hander showed no mercy against the bats of the Tampa Bay Rays and, despite only fanning two opponents, he only got a run on a ticket and an error. In his eleventh Major League Opening Day start, Detmers is the second rookie in the organization’s history to throw a no-hitter and the seventh pitcher to do so as a single.
