One of the fiercest rivalries in recent years on the ring will come to an end in September, when Canelo Álvarez and Gennady Golovkin meet for the third time in their long career.
The historic fight, scheduled for September 17, was revealed this Tuesday by the Mexican boxer’s promoter, Matchroom Boxing, which confirmed that the fight will be exclusive to the DAZN pay-per-view platform.
This will be the third clash between the two boxing legends, after their previous confrontations in 2017 and 2018 for the middleweight category.
The fight resulted in a draw the first time around, but a year later, Canelo Álvarez would win by decision and become the World Boxing Association (WBA-WBC) and World Boxing Council champion (WBC-WBC).
This announcement also confirms an open secret that was spread throughout the boxing world after Álvarez’s defeat on May 7 against Dmitri Bivol. Despite the fact that the Mexican had requested a rematch aagainst the Russian, he admitted on Monday that he had given up on it and that a new bout would be scheduled.
Although the date is already defined, the location will be informed in the coming weeks.
Gennady Golovkin will fight for the first time in his career at super middleweight against Canelo Álvarez
Another unique aspect of Canelo Álvarez’s bout with Gennady Golovkin is that Golovkin will have to move up in weight to compete in the super middleweight division, which Álvarez has dominated throughout his career.
Even though in previous editions, the Guadalajara native had to lose weight, this time he will have to return to his category after going up to light heavyweight against Bivol.
For Golovkin it will be a great challenge, since at 40 years of age he will want to match the series against Álvarez. Additionally, this will be his first fight in the category, highlighting that he currently holds the WBA, International Boxing Federation (IBF-IBF) and International Boxing Organization (OIB-IBO) middleweight belts and is on a four-fight win streak.
For his part, Canelo’s defeat represented the second of his career and the first time he has lost the number one title in the pound-for-pound ranking since 2013, when he faced Floyd Mayweather Jr.
