All About the NBA Salary Cap for the 2022/23 Season

The NBA Salary Cap has been adjusted year after year in accordance with the changes the league’s market undergoes season after season, and this one was no exception. The Salary Cap will increase compared to the 2021/22 season.

The NBA stated that the Salary Cap for this 2022/23 season in U.S. basketball will be set at $123.655 million, while the Luxury Tax Cap will be set at $150.267 million.

This represents a 9.99% increase over the NBA Salary Cap for the 2021/22 season, which stood at $112.414 million, while the increase in the Luxury Cap is 10% over the $136.606 million in the previous season.

These changes became effective July 1, along with the start of NBA Free Agency, so teams know the limits within which they can manage to improve their rosters for the upcoming season.

In addition, it is important to highlight that the minimum salary for a team for the upcoming 2022/23 season is located at 90% of the NBA Salary Cap, which translates to about $111.290 million.

What does the outlook look like for teams regarding the 2022/23 NBA Salary Cap?

The NBA’s 2021/22 season featured 12 teams that exceeded the Luxury Tax Cap: the Miami Heat, Denver Nuggets, Dallas Mavericks, Utah Jazz, Toronto Raptors, Washington Wizards, Philadelphia 76ers, Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Lakers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Los Angeles Clippers, Brooklyn Nets and Golden State Warriors.

After trades and signings of various players in this Free Agency, the only teams remaining below the 2022/23 NBA Salary Cap are the San Antonio Spurs ($96,847,780 million) and the Detroit Pistons ($116,899,533 million). These teams, along with the Memphis Grizzlies, New York Knicks, Houston Rockets, Orlando Magic and Utah Jazz are currently below the Luxury Tax Cap.

However, this could all change as we get closer to the start of the regular season.
