Current WTA number one Ash Barty shocked the sports world when she announced her retirement from professional tennis at the age of 25.
In the middle of the matches of the Miami Open 2022, despite the fact that the Australian has remained at the top of the rankings for 114 weeks uninterruptedly, she published an emotional video on Instagram in which she announced her decision to say goodbye to professional tennis.
“Today is difficult and full of emotion for me, as I announce my retirement from tennis,” said the player, who at the beginning of her career retired a couple of years to devote herself to professional cricket.
The reigning Australian Open champion added: “I am so grateful for all that this sport has given me and I leave proud and fulfilled. Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way, I will always be grateful for the lifelong memories we created together.”
There are no further details about Barty’s plans, but being so young, it is not ruled out that in the future she will decide to leave retirement, as it happened with other figures such as Martina Hingis and Kim Clijsters.
