Interesting Facts and Trivia about the 2023 BMW Championship
- Patrick Cantlay has won both of the last two editions of the BMW Championship. He took home $1.71 million in 2021 by edging Bryson DeChambeau in the playoffs at Caves Valley. Then he pulled off another win the following year in Wilmington to become just the first player since Dustin Johnson to win the BMW Championship multiple times.
- The BMW Championship traces its history all the way back to 1899 when it was first staged, then known as the Western Open. The tournament was known by that name for nearly 100 years. In 1987, it was changed to the Beatrice Western Open, then to Centel Western Open from 1990 to 1992, and Sprint Western Open in 1993. The event was known as Motorola Western Open from 1994 to 1999 and Advil Western Open from 2000 to 2002. Tiger Woods won the 100th Western Open in 2003 before it became the Cialis Western Open from 2004 to 2006. The BMW Championship came into the picture as the name of the tournament in 2007.
- In the first edition of the tournament as the BMW Championship in 2007, Tiger Woods topped the field and took home the biggest cut ($1.26 million) of the total purse ($7 million).
- In 2024, the BMW Championship will be held at Castle Pines Golf Club in Castle Rock, Colorado.
