Saul Canelo Alvarez will face Dmirty Bivol on May 7 to defend his super middleweight titles, but according to reports this will not be the only fight he will fight this year and there is already talk of two potential opponents.
According to the information released by the promoter Matchroom Boxing, the Mexican boxer would have two more fights in 2022.
For several months there has been talk that a third fight between Canelo Alvarez and Kazakhstan’s Gennady Golovkin could take place in the near future. It is known that both parties are interested in completing the trilogy, so if it is defined soon, the fight could take place next September.
After confirming the fight against the Russian fighter (Bivol), it seems that the Mexican will not have to return to middleweight, but could face other opponents who are within the light heavyweight category.
The potential opponents for Canelo Alvarez are: Joshua Buatsi and Craig Richards, both in the 175 lbs. category.
These two light heavyweight boxers will face each other on May 21. If the Jalisco native manages to defeat the Russian, he would be facing the possibility of defending the WBA light heavyweight belt against the winner of the Buatsi-Richards fight.
British promoter Eddie Hearn, speaking to TalkSport Boxing, had something to say about a crossover between the winner of the Buatsi-Richards fight. “Just wait. You know, we have the Canelo vs Bivol fight coming up. Maybe I’ll get the winner for both (Joshua Buatsi and Craig Richards) on May 21. Whoever comes out on top could go against the winner of Canelo and Bivol and the losers would still be relevant.” Hearn said, implying that it could be two winner-loser fights.
On the other hand, he also said that the Mexican wants to fight in England and also referred to the fight against GGG: “Canelo Alvarez wants to fight in the UK. We made that deal with him. If he is successful when he fights Bivol, we will do Canelo vs. Golovkin in September.”
In addition he said that, after the request of the boxer and his trainer, the fight in December could be in Guadalajara or London, although he also sees possibilities of hosting it in the fighter’s hometown: “Canelo and Eddy Reynoso want to fight in December, they asked me to look for options for Guadalajara and London”.
Possible rivals for Canelo Alvarez
The Ghanaian boxer is 29 years old. He is in the light heavyweight category at 175 pounds: in his last fights, at least, he has registered that weight. He is 1.88 meters tall, so he is a little taller than the Aztec fighter.
Craig Richards is 31 years old, but will turn 32 on April 30. He is 6’6″ and also weighs around 175 pounds.
We will have to wait for the Buatsi vs Richards and Canelo Alvarez vs Bivol fights to find out what’s next for the Mexican.
