Updated Purse and Prize Money Breakdown for the Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin 3 Fight on September 17 2022
The earnings in this trilogy of fights between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin have been enormous for both sides, and this third edition of the fight is not expected to be any different.
In the first fight between the two boxers in September 2017, the Mexican earned around $40 million, while the Kazakh’s earnings were somewhere near $30 million.
In the second edition between the two fighters in 2018, Canelo earned just over $30 million, while Golovkin again earned around $30 million. With this, between the two fights, around $130 million has been moved, and a much larger increase is expected for this third edition of the fight.
Canelo’s base salary for the fight will be $10 million, and pay-per-view bonuses will see him earn a total of $55 million; rounding up, he’ll earn a total of $65 million. However, if the event sells more than 4 million pay-per-views –which is likely considering the status of the Mexican– Canelo could earn up to an absurd $100 million.
Golovkin, who has a much lower profile than Canelo in terms of publicity, would not see such high revenues regardless of how well the fight sells. The Kazakh has a base salary of $8 million, and with $35 million in pay-per-view revenue, he could bring in around $43 million, which could rise to $44 million depending on how well he sells the fight.
It should be remembered that these numbers are speculative and may not be exact, so things could change once the event is over.
Canelo and Golovkin Are Not the Only Ones to Perform
Not only will Canelo and Golovkin be in the ring for the bout, but also referee Russell Mora Jr. will take home a total of $10,000 for making sure the fight is conducted fairly.
On the other hand, the Nevada Athletic Commission chose Dave Moretti, Steve Weisfeld, and David Sutherland as judges, and the first two were already in the second edition of this fight, which saw Canelo win by 115-114. Each will earn a total of $8,000.
