There is no surprise that Alvarez is the heavy favorite to win this massive showdown in Las Vegas. He has all the super middleweight belts and his opponent, Charlo, despite being a champion in his own right, is moving up in weight. In his most recent bout, Alvarez scored a unanimous decision victory over John Ryder last May. It was the third straight time that an Alvarez fight went to the scorecards, a stretch that includes his loss to Dmitry Bivol when he ventured into the light heavyweight division last year.
Since that Bivol fight, Alvarez looked great again, defeating Gennady Golovkin via UD and then taking care of business versus Ryder. Clearly, one thing that is going in Alvarez’s favor, at least on paper, is the fact that he’s very familiar and comfortable fighting in the super middleweight division. He should be able to take the punches of Charlo, who is talented but only has a 54.29 percent knockout rate. Conversely, Alvarez, even though it’s been a while he has knocked someone out, has a much higher 66.1 percent KO rate.
Betting on Jermell Charlo (Odds on DraftKings)
- Odds: +290
- Fights: 37
- Victories: 35
- Victories by KO: 19
- Defeats: 1
- Draws: 1
Do not sleep on Charlo. Sure, he is the smaller fighter opposite Alvarez, but he’s got physical advantages over the Mexican. For one, he is four inches taller than Alvarez. Moreover, Charlo has almost a full three-inch reach advantage. Those are just some of the tools he can use and capitalize on when trying to solve the super middleweight champion inside the ring.
Charlo is coming off a win over Brian Castano in May of 2022 to retain his light middleweight belts. He left zero doubts in that win after he and Castano battled to a split draw in their first encounter a year before. Charlo has obviously not fought for quite some time heading into his showdown against Alvarez. While there is always going to be worry about rust, Charlo’s body is also undeniably fresh. He and Alvarez are no longer at the primes, so perhaps that long breather for Charlo is more of a plus than a minus for him. Charlo might also be facing a diminished version of Alvarez, who did not look to be at his best in his most recent bouts.
El Jefe’s Prediction on Canelo Alvarez vs Jermell Charlo
Alvarez’s experience and defense will carry him in this fight. He will soften up and tire out Charlo before scoring a knockout in the later rounds.
Prediction:
Alvarez wins via KO.
