Betting on the Washington Commanders (+3)
Preseason record: 0-0
The Commanders were the only NFC East division team that failed to make the playoffs in 2022, though, they still finished with a non-losing record of 8-8-1. Can they be better this year? That’s hard to tell, but signs aren’t exactly good either.
Sam Howell is expected to start for the team, and he’s someone that’s hard to trust at the moment given his limited experience. The Commanders did add veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett in the offseason but he doesn’t offer plenty of upside for Washington, which averaged only 18.9 points per game in 2022. However, there’s promise in Washington’s defense. After all, the Commanders were eighth last season with just 20.2 points allowed per contest. They also used their first two picks in the 2023 NFL Draft on secondary pieces Emmanuel Forbes and Quan Martin.
Betting on the Cleveland Browns (-3)
Preseason record: 1-0
The Browns started things off in the preseason on a positive note, as they defeated the New York Jets in the Hall of Fame Game last week, 21-16. Kellen Mond and Dorian Thompson-Robinson both saw action for Cleveland in that game, with the latter seemingly getting more attention because of his dual-threat capabilities.
Thompson-Robinson went 8/11 for 82 passing yards and a touchdown and also rushed for 36 yards on six carries. He is someone who could have a bright future in the NFL, and based on how he fared in the Jets game, it’s not going to be all that surprising if he goes off again this Friday. Also impressing for the Browns was linebacker Tony Fields II, who had six total tackles and a tackle for loss. Cleveland’s rushing attack looked fine even though star running back Nick Chubb did not play. The Browns rushed for 172 yards and a touchdown on 33 carries against the Jets.
