After a month of campaigning, we can already start putting together a list of candidates for the Cy Young award in the Major Leagues. In this case, it is the American League, which has many stadiums where it is very difficult to be an effective pitcher. We present the analysis of who are the Cy Young favorites of the young circuit after the culmination of the month of April.
5.- Alek Manoah – Cy Young Favorites
Toronto Blue Jays young starter Alek Manoah already gave us flashes of his talent last season and in 2022 he put up some pretty impressive numbers during the first month that made him one of our Cy Young Favorites. In addition to sharing the league lead in wins with a 4-0 record, he is third in WHIP (0.84), fourth in ERA (1.45) and strikeouts (32) and opponents are batting just .165 against him.
4.- Joe Ryan – Cy Young Favorites
Although Joe Ryan already opened five games for the Twins last season, the pitcher still qualifies for consideration for the Rookie of the Year award at the end of the campaign. He could be on his way to the American League Cy Young award if he keeps pitching the way he has been doing. After 27.2 innings of work, his opponents are batting just .167, for which he has a 1.63 ERA, with 28 strikeouts and a 3-1 record. Which is, indeed, a pleasant surprise from the Cy Young Power Rankings.
3.- Logan Gilbert – Cy Young Favorites
In his second season in the Major Leagues, Logan Gilbert looks ready to show why he was considered one of baseball’s top prospects. The Seattle Mariners’ starter was unbeatable during the first month of the season and is one of the league leaders in games won with a 4-0 record. Gilbert also leads all Major League Baseball majors with a 0.64 ERA+ and a 555 ERA+. In 28 innings of work he has 27 strikeouts and only two home runs, something extremely important for him.
2.- Dylan Cease – Cy Young Favorites
Dylan Cease was one of the pleasant surprises of the Chicago White Sox last season, and the right-hander seems determined to improve on that performance on the mound this season. During the first month, Cease was one of the few bright spots for the White Sox, winning three games and losing only one with a 2.48 ERA. The starter is second in FIP in the American League with 1.97, while he allowed only one home run and struck out 39, third best record in the league, after pitching 29 episodes.
1.- Kevin Gausman – Cy Young Favorites
After receiving votes for the National League Cy Young last year, Kevin Gausman came to the American League this season hungry for revenge. The Toronto Blue Jays starter has been by far the best pitcher in the Major Leagues during the first month, and his numbers confirm it. Gausman leads our Cy Young Power Rankings by leading the entire circuit in FIP with 0.49, first in innings pitched in the American League with 31.2 and in K/BB ratio with 33.6. In that work he has not allowed a single home run, has not given a single ticket, has struck out 41 opponents, the second best figure in the young circuit, and his effectiveness is 2.27. How awesome!
