It was announced a few days ago that Elon Musk had bought Twitter for a total of $44 billion in his attempt to make it the “world’s freest social network”.
No, not $44 million. It was $44 billion. 44,000,000,000 dollars! A lot of zeros, right? Be that as it may, we can’t even picture that many zeros in our head, but we do know something… it is a lot of money.
It comes as no surprise that Elon Musk possesses such a large sum of money, as he is the richest man in the world in 2022. Not to play with the money in other people’s pockets, but let’s suppose Elon Musk had wanted to do something else with his money: With the money he spent on Twitter, what sports clubs could he have acquired all over the world?
Barcelona
Beyond the sporting and institutional crisis that Barcelona has gone through in recent years, the fact is that the team as a brand continues to be a benchmark in soccer worldwide.
So much so that Forbes magazine ranks it as the world’s most valued club, with a total value of 4.76 billion euros. For a mere mortal, this is a large sum of money, but not for Elon Musk, who could easily invest in the Catalan club if he was interested in the company.
Real Madrid
Barcelona’s fierce rival in the Spanish league, Real Madrid, is second in terms of the most highly valued teams in the world according to Forbes. The 13-time Champions League winner and 34-time Spanish La Liga winner is worth 4.75 billion, and would be a bargain for Elon Musk. After all… Who wouldn’t want to own what is recognized as the greatest team in the history of soccer?
If Elon Musk were to buy both clubs (which, if it were to happen, would be quite curious), he would have spent just €9.51 billion so far.
Chelsea
Chelsea is for sale, and everyone is aware of that. If Elon Musk wanted to invest in soccer, this would be his best chance without a doubt, and he would continue the reign of another rich man like Abramovich.
The “Blues” are valued at 3.2 billion. This adds up 12.71 B to our imaginary account.
New York Yankees
How about Elon Musk wanting to sponsor your space travel in baseball games? Then, his best option is to buy the Bronx Bombers. Just imagine it: every time a home run connects at Yankee Stadium, the giant screens in the stadium shows a rocket flying.
The small investment would cost Elon Musk a total of $6 billion, as the Yankees are the highest valued team in Major League Baseball this 2022 according to Forbes. Our imaginary figure is growing: 18.71 billion and counting.
Los Angeles Dodgers
If Elon Musk doesn’t want to manage a team located at the other end of the United States, then he could simply buy the Dodgers. Los Angeles is not far from Hawthorne, where the SpaceX company is headquartered, so the billionaire could come and go as he pleases to manage his business.
In this 2022, the Dodgers cost about $4.07 million, so that’s already $22.78 million in spending…and still to go.
Boston Red Sox
Elon Musk better stay away from Boston, because with his mentality of wanting to modernize and adapt everything to the new times and to the future, it may occur to him to tear down the mythical “Green Monster” of Fenway Park. Or maybe he can restructure the entire stadium because, come on, it’s not like he lacks the money to do it.
If Musk wanted to, he would write an instant check for the $3.9 billion cost of the Red Sox. That makes a total of $26.68 billion.
New York Knicks
Although the Knicks are inconsequential in the NBA, their market value is unquestionable. After all, it is a team located in New York, one of the most expensive and cosmopolitan cities in the world. Anything that is located in New York costs way more than in many other places in the world: and this includes the Knicks.
The Knicks are the highest valued team in the NBA at $6.12 billion. That’s $32.8 billion and we’re running out of money, only $9 billion left? What can you do with that?
Golden State Warriors
We know! Let’s buy one of the most successful NBA franchises in recent years. The Warriors are valued at $5.2 billion, and surely Elon Musk wouldn’t shake his hand at writing the check. Of course, considering that he wants to get into the mess that means the possible transfer of the team to another city.
We have spent 38 billion already. What should we do now?
Los Angeles Lakers
Simple, we purchase another Los Angeles team and then we’ll have even more options of what to do during our weekend in the city. The Lakers are valued at 5.14 billion in this 2022.
This brings the total to 43.14 billion. Is there any money left over? Well, Elon Musk could build them a new separate venue so they have to stop sharing CryptoCom Arena with the Clippers. Poor people are not allowed here.
