The Seattle Mariners agreed to a trade with the Cincinnati Reds, in which they received Eugenio Suárez and Jesse Winker, according to a report by ESPN journalist Buster Olney.
Regarding the side of the National League, after this move they acquired, in addition to outfielder Jake Fraley, pitchers Justin Dunn and Brandon Williamson.
With Suárez and Winker’s arrival, the Mariners add two star hitters who will greatly strengthen the team’s lineup ahead of the 2022 Major League season, where they hope to be competitive again in a Western Division that will have the Astros from Houston and Los Angeles Angels as the main favorites.
Let’s remember that the Mariners have just finished second in their division, with a record of 90 wins and 72 losses, all of which allowed them to be very close to qualifying for their first postseason series in 20 years.
As for the Reds, they are clearly in a rebuilding process, so the 3 players they receive are part of that project for the medium and long term.
Eugenio Suarez’s Numbers in the 2021 MLB Season
Despite the fact that the Venezuelan player showed a good dose of power and proved to be capable of defending third base and shortstop, he has not come from recording a consistent performance with the bat.
In the 2021 major league campaign, Suárez finished with a .198 average and a .286 OBP, with 31 home runs and 79 RBIs. All of which are numbers that show irregularity and strength.
As for Winker, he achieved the best performance of his career in the Major Leagues, closing the regular round with an offensive line of 305/.394/.556, with 24 homers and 71 RBIs. In fact, he received his first call up to the MLB All-Star Game.
In terms of money, Winker faces salary arbitration for the next two seasons and the Venezuelan still has about $36 million to make over the next three years.
