The Brooklyn Nets are deeply concerned about some recent developments. According to The Athletic columnist Shams Charania, Kyrie Irving is considering declining his player option for the 2022/23 NBA season.
We’re talking about an option that would guarantee the star point guard an annual salary of $36.9 million. However, the parties have yet to settle the player’s status, and the deadline is June 29.
If Irving decides not to continue in the Brooklyn team, he would instantly become the most prized free agent in the NBA, despite the fact that in recent seasons he has been involved in several situations that have limited his appearances on the different stages of the best basketball league in the world.
It is important to remember that previously, after the elimination by sweep against the Boston Celtics in the first round of the 2022 playoffs, the 30-year-old player said that he “did not intend to go elsewhere.” But, the truth is that the days go by and the possibility that we will see Irving with another team in the coming season looks closer and closer.
After playing 103 games in a Nets uniform, the point guard who won the Rookie of the Year award in the 2011-22 season averages 27.2 points, 6.1 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game. These are stellar numbers, but what casts doubt on his performance is the fact that he’s missed more than half of the Nets’ regular-round games (113) since joining the team in 2019.
Teams That Would Be Interested in Kyrie Irving
If Irving leaves the Nets, there are several teams that would be seriously interested in signing him for the 2022-23 NBA season.
The Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks top the list of prospective destinations for the former Duke University member, according to a Bleacher Source media report. Other sources assure that the Los Angeles Clippers would also be a contender for the services of the star point guard.
On the Lakers’ side, acquiring Irving would be an excellent way to start all over after the team’s disastrous performance in the recently finished season, where they ranked 11th in the Western Conference, with a record of 33 wins and 49 losses.
