Latin Winners of the Vuelta a España Throughout History

The Vuelta a España is a legendary race in the cycling calendar, as is its history. The Latinos who have won the Vuelta a España are part of a select list.

Winning this race involves almost a month of grueling and exhausting competition, which is why the victory is so satisfying. In honor of their efforts and results, we bring you all the Latin American winners of the Vuelta a España.

Victories

Lucho Herrera – 1987

In 1987 the first Latin American won the Vuelta a España. We’re talking about Colombian Lucho Herrera, who claimed victory in the 42nd edition in Madrid. That year, 179 cyclists started the race, but only 88 finished.

Lucho Herrera had an astonishing average speed of 37.143 km/h. In stage 11 of the Lagos de Covadonga, the Colombian won the yellow jersey, which he kept until the end. Thus, this cyclist became the first Colombian cyclist, and at the same time, the first Latin American and non-European cyclist to win the Vuelta a España.

Nairo Quintana – 2016

In its 71st edition, a second Latin American and Colombian won the Vuelta a España. It was Nairo Quintana, who is still competing and will compete in the Vuelta this year.

That time, the Colombian not only won the general classification, but also the young rider classification with a total time of 83 h 31 min and 28 s. As if that wasn’t enough, he beat his rival Chris Froome.

Fabio Parra – 1989

FABIO PARRA.- Vuelta España 1989 – etapa Navacerrada.-Fabio Enrique Parra Pinto (Sogamoso, Boyacá, 22 de noviembre de 1959) es un exciclista colombiano, que hizo parte de la generación de la década de 1980 de su país que se destacó en las grandes vueltas europeas. Por su buen rendimiento en todos los terrenos, fue uno de los ciclistas colombianos que mejor se adaptó a la forma de correr en carreteras europeas. Además de ser un buen escalador, como la mayoría de colombianos de su generación, se desempeñaba bien en el terreno llano y en las pruebas contra el reloj.Cuenta en su trayectoria con 8 participaciones en el Tour de Francia, obteniendo un podio con su tercer lugar en la versión de 1988, siendo el primer y único latinoamericano en conseguir esta posición en la historia de esta competencia, hasta el Tour de 2013 con el segundo lugar en el podio de Nairo Quintana. Fue también subcampeón de la Vuelta a España de 1989 tras Pedro Delgado, en una de las carreras más disputadas, pues faltando una etapa, el colombiano consiguió el liderato en forma transitoria, perdiendo finalmente la carrera por 35 segundos. Adicionalmente se impuso en varias etapas y obtuvo la camiseta de mejor neoprofesional tanto en la Vuelta a España como en el Tour de Francia, destacándose la victoria en el Tour de 1985 en Morzine la que llegó a la meta junto a su compatriota Luis Herrera, tras una escapada o la victoria en la crono-escalada de la Vuelta a España de 1991, sobre figuras como Pedro Delgado y Miguel Indurain. Participó además en 8 ediciones de la Vuelta a España donde ocupó cuatro veces el quinto puesto y terminó en una ocasión segundo, lo que evidencia su gran regularidad. Consiguió también la camiseta de la montaña y un tercer lugar en la Vuelta a Suiza de 1987, la que perdió por escasos segundos.En las dos competencias más importante de su país, participó en doce ocasiones en la Vuelta a Colombia con dos triunfos en la clasificación general (1981, 1992), dos segundos lugares (1985, 1989) y siete victorias de etapa, y en el Clásico RCN con una victoria en la clasificación general (1987) tres segundos lugares (1981,1982,1989) y tres triunfos parciales.

Pacho Rodriguez – 1985

We have reached the last place on the podium occupied by Latin American winners of the Vuelta a España. Here, we find Pacho Rodríguez, the Colombian who for the first time reached the final podium in Madrid, two years before Lucho Herrera. This cyclist competed between 1984 and 1991.

Óscar de Jesús Vargas – 1989

Oscar de Jesus Vargas, Fabio Parra’s compatriot, shared the podium with him the same year Parra finished second. This was the first time that two Colombians shared the podium in the Vuelta a España. Miguel Ángel López – 2018

Finally, Miguel Ángel López is the most recent Latin American winner of the Vuelta a España to reach third place in 2018. He was 2 minutes and 04 seconds behind leader Simon Yates. That same year, he also reached third position in the Giro d’Italia, which put him at the top among Latin American cyclists that year.
