Marcelo Michel Leaño was dismissed from Guadalajara after failing to win in the last four Liga MX matches.
Patience ran out at Chivas and, although the board of directors ratified the coach, Marcelo Michel Leaño, this Thursday, April 14, his dismissal was announced. Guadalajara lost 1-3 to Monterrey on Wednesday night, and after the defeat the fans present at the Akron Stadium called for the coach’s dismissal and they were pleased.
The Guadalajara team has four matches without a win, and under the orders of Marcelo Michel Leaño they have lost five of the 13 matches played so far in the Clausura 2022, with only three victories, which represent the second lowest number of wins in the campaign.
Chivas began the match winning with a goal by Ángel Zaldívar on a penalty kick in the 39th minute, but they were unable to take advantage of the situation, and before halftime Monterrey tied thaks to Jesús Gallardo. In the second half, the tragedy of the red and white team was completed, as Sebastián Vegas scored the second goal in the 59th minute, and 10 minutes later it was Arturo González who sealed the score.
There was despair in the stands at what was happening on the field. Coach Marcelo Michel Leaño had to watch the game from the board of directors’ box due to a suspension, and even there the fans made their dissatisfaction known to him with the chant “Fuera Leaño” (“Leaño out”).
In addition to shouting for the coach’s departure, there was also booing towards the team.
This is not the first time that Chivas fans have called for the coach’s departure, as they have been expressing their discontent since the match against Querétaro which ended as a tie. This Thursday, through a press release, Guadalajara informed that Michel Leaño will no longer be on the red and white bench and that Ricardo Cadena will be the interim technical director.
“To our fans and public opinion, after the unfortunate results of the team in the Clausura 2022 Tournament, we inform that the determination was made to conclude the process of Marcelo Michel Leaño as head coach of the First Team. As of today, Ricardo Cadena, Tapatío’s current coach, will act as interim coach along with an institutional coaching staff for the remainder of the tournament. In the meantime, the Sports Direction headed by Ricardo Peláez will continue with the analysis of candidates to appoint a new coach. Once the decision is made, a press conference will be held to answer questions from the media,” reads the press release.
Marcelo Michel Leaño’s Numbers with Chivas
Chivas dismissed Víctor Manuel Vucetich from his position in September 2021, and Michel Leaño, who was involved with the team as a director, was chosen to replace Vucetich on the bench.
Since Marcelo Michel Leaño took over, he has coached 22 games and recorded only five wins, which represents a 22.72% performance rate. They recorded five wins, nine draws and eight defeats, including the most recent one against Monterrey.
Chivas is in 14th place and still has a chance of reaching the Mexican soccer’s big stage, but, in order to do so, the team will have to win all four of its remaining matches in the regular phase against Cruz Azul, Tijuana, Pumas and Necaxa. This Saturday, April 16 at 21:00 (Mexico Central Time), Chivas will visit the Estadio Azteca to take on “Máquina Cementera” in search of three points that will make the road to the final stretch of the Clausura 2022 easier for them.
