Robinson Canó is the central figure of the biggest news of the moment in organized baseball, after being placed on assignment by the New York Mets ahead of Monday’s MLB game on May 2.

Despite the departure from the Metropolitan team’s roster, the 39-year-old Dominican player will collect a significant amount of money as part of the contract he signed at the end of 2013 with the Seattle Mariners for 10 years and $240 million.

Considering that Canó has a contract signed through 2023, the Mets will have to pay him just over $40 million, regardless of whether the player ends up signing with another team for the minimum salary ($775,000) heading into the final stretch of the 2022 Major League Baseball season.

The Seattle Mariners, on the other hand, owe $3.75 million to this player, who, despite his stellar numbers, may not have a better chance of joining the MLB Hall of Fame due to the suspensions he received in recent years for using banned substances.

Let’s recall that the Quisqueyano arrived at Citi Field at the end of 2018, as the main figure in a trade that involved Edwin Diaz, and that sent to Seattle a group of ballplayers formed by: Jay Bruce (OF), Anthony Swarzak (P), Gerson Bautista (P) and prospects Jarred Kelenic and Justin Dunn.

After playing 168 games in a New York Mets uniform, Canó posted a .269 average and .315 OBP, with 24 home runs and 72 runs batted in.

Despite being at the tail end of his major league career, the Dominican still looks good enough physically to receive an opportunity from a team in need of hitting reinforcements.

What was Robinson Canó’s best season with the Mets?

Canó’s best with the Mets was seen during the 2019 MLB season, when he totaled 13 homers and 39 RBIs after 107 games played. He also posted a .256 average and .307 OBP that year.

Given that we’re talking about a player with eight All-Star Game appearances and five Silver Bats, this was an unexceptional performance.
