With the start of the regular season officially set for tomorrow, two games had to be modified on MLB ‘s Opening Day due to weather scenarios that would have severely affected field conditions for the opening game.
The following are the rescheduled games: the New York Yankees hosting the Boston Red Sox with Gerrit Cole vs. Nathan Eovaldi as the stipulated openers, and the Minnesota Twins hosting the Seattle Mariners with rookie Joe Ryan vs. reigning American League Cy Young Robbie Ray as the debut matchup for both pitchers and teams.
Both matches were rescheduled for the following day, Friday, April 8, with the same schedule as it was initially planned.
The Yankees – Red Sox game was scheduled to be the first of all games to take place, not having faced each other on Opening Day since 2005. With the rescheduling, the first game of the season will now be the Chicago Cubs hosting the Milwaukee Brewers tomorrow at 2:20 p.m. ET. Weather forecasts in New York City suggest heavy rain throughout the day.
Meanwhile, at Twins – Mariners, forecasts include rain and even possible snow at game time, delaying the first time a rookie will open Opening Day for the Twins since Tom Hall did so in 1969. However, it won’t be the only debut to take place that day: Carlos Correa and Gary Sanchez are also lined up to commemorate their addition to the team from the pre-season. Mariners’ Jesse Winker, Eugenio Suarez and star prospect Julio Rodríguez will also debut their uniforms for the first time this Friday.
