The winners of the MLB Player of the Week award in the major leagues were announced on Monday, as is traditional every Monday, with this week’s span covering the most remarkable names from May 1 to May 8, 2022.
As announced by the league through its social networks, the winner in the American League was Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Manuel Margot, while in the National League the winner was Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Rowdy Tellez.
MLB Player of the Week: Manuel Margot – American League
Let’s start with Margot. The Dominican player became the Rays’ clutch man by hitting two hits that put his team up for the week. The first was a two-run single in the eighth inning of Wednesday’s game against the Oakland Athletics that helped Tampa Bay clinch the sweep.
The other hit came on Friday, against the Seattle Mariners, and it was a three-run home run in the ninth inning that turned the game around and clinched the victory. The home run was one of three he hit during the week, in addition to finishing with a .500 (24-12) average, 12 RBIs, 12 runs scored, two base steals and the Majors’ leading OPS with 1.580.
Margot is the first Rays player to be Player of the Week since Brandon Lowe, who also took home the award during one of the weeks of August 2020.
MLB Player of the Week: Rowdy Tellez – National League
Tellez did not lag behind in his work and was also the main protagonist of a great week for his team, the Brewers.
While the starter was hitting all week, his big night came on Wednesday against the Cincinnati Reds. In that game, he hit two homers, gave up four hits and drove in eight runs: this latter figure represents a record for the Brewers.
For the week, Tellez batted .321 with nine hits, three homers, three doubles and 12 RBIs, with seven of those nine hits being more than one-pad connections. This award also gives Milwaukee two consecutive winners for the Player of the Week award, as Willy Adames had previously been recognized.
