Unfortunately, the number of baseball players suspended by the MLB increases as time goes by. They range from those who have received minimal sanctions to those who have jeopardized their careers by their inappropriate behavior.
Here are the five MLB-suspended players who have been in the eye of the storm. Baseball players are often the talk of the town, either for their good performances on the diamond or for their bad reputation outside the sport. The most recent topic arises from the sanctioning of the Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher, Trevor Bauer. And also because of the wave of cases that have been presented related to this topic in the major leagues, but with the same presence in all major sports.
1.- Trevor Bauer
We begin this list of the 5 baseball players suspended by the MLB for domestic or sexual violence with the most talked about case in recent days. Trevor Bauer just received a historic sanction from the MLB after being charged with sexual assault. The suspension is for 324 games, which in baseball calendar time would be the equivalent to two full seasons. The player has not played since June 28, since he was on leave while his situation was being defined, but the punishment was announced recently.
What now? Bauer will appeal the sanction, with the defense that his case was resolved in his favor in the national courts. However, it is expected that his suspension would be long-lasting after the repercussions it brought to the major leagues media, and the investigation by the MLB itself may bring different conclusions. If Bauer serves his punishment, he will be eligible to pitch in the majors again in late April 2024.
2.- Derek Norris
Derek Norris was suspended in 2017 for the entire season after his fiancée, Kristen Eck, accused him of physically and psychologically assaulting her. Following the investigation, the Major League Baseball commissioner announced that Norris would be sanctioned because of the league’s anti-domestic violence policies.
3.- Aroldis Chapman
In 2015, it became known that Yankees player Aroldis Chapman had an argument with his girlfriend in which he held her by the neck. Later, he accepted that after what happened with the woman, he took a gun and went to his garage and discharged it eight times. That led to the player being one of the suspended players, and the first to have a 30-game punishment.
4.- Julio Urías
In 2019 MLB suspended Mexican pitcher Julio Urías. He was involved in a domestic violence episode at a shopping mall in California and was given a 20-game suspension. The Commissioner considered that although he had violated the domestic violence conduct policy, he cooperated in the investigation.
5.- José Torres
In 2018, the San Diego Padres pitcher José Torres was arrested on domestic violence charges, what conditioned the MLB to suspend him for 100 games without pay. In addition to the punishment that prevented him from playing, he also participated in a program to treat his aggressive behavior.
