A few days before the start of the 2022 season, MLB announced the creation of the “Home Run Derby X”, an international tour that will feature the participation of several former figures of organized baseball from the United States.
It is a home run competition with MLB legends representing the teams in which they shone during their respective careers. For example: Adrián González would play for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Geovany Soto for the Chicago Cubs, Jonny Gomes for the Boston Red Sox and Nick Swisher for the New York Yankees.
“Inspired by the success and simplicity of the Home Run Derby the day before the MLB All-Star Game, Home Run Derby X has been developed with the goal of attracting a new audience to baseball; create high-energy live event experiences and opportunities for digital storytelling,” MLB explained in a statement that quickly went viral on social media.
Among the rules of this exhibition, the fact that the field will be smaller than one MLB stands out, while each batter will have the opportunity to make 25 swings.
For its first edition, the event would be held in London, Seoul (South Korea) and Mexico City. It is not ruled out that other cities will later be added to this tour, which promises to agglomerate hundreds of thousands of fans around the world.
In this way, MLB seeks to gain strength in its plan to globalize baseball, something that has been successfully achieved in the NBA thanks to the great work of Commissioner Adam Silver.
