Betting on the San Diego Padres (-190)
Joe Musgrove has been nearly automatic for the Padres on the mound over his last few several starts, including the one on June 23 at home versus the Washington Nationals. In that game, Musgrove silenced the Nats for seven innings, surrendering just an earned run on six hits with seven strikeouts in a 13-3 victory.
The Padres have won in all of his last three starts and in five of his last six. So far this month of June, Musgrove has gone 4-0 with a 2.10 ERA in 30 innings across five starts. That one no-decision saw him toss five innings of one-run ball in a 4-1 home loss to the Seattle Mariners. Clearly, not his fault that the Padres lost that one. In any case, Musgrove will be a huge threat to the Pirates, whose current roster has just a .214 career batting average against him.
Starting pitcher: Joe Musgrove (6-2, 3.88 ERA)
Betting on the Pittsburgh Pirates (+160)
Luis Ortiz will look to follow up his sterling performance last Friday versus the Miami Marlins on the road with another one when he faces the Padres later tonight. Against the Marlins, Ortiz went eight innings long and gave up just an earned run on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
He has looked dependable of late for the Pirates, as he’s allowed only two earned runs on 11 hits with 11 strikeouts and five walks across 12.2 innings over his past two starts. Although Musgrove has good numbers overall against current Pirates hitters, the pair of Ke’Bryan Hayes and Jack Suwinski could do some real damage with their bats in this contest. Hayes is 3-for-6 in his career against Musgrove, while Suwinski is 3-for-6 as well in the same lifetime matchup.
Starting pitcher: Luis Ortiz (2-3, 3.74 ERA)
El Jefe’s Prediction on San Diego Padres vs Pittsburgh Pirates
Musgrove is still worth trusting. The Padres win this battle by leaning on the pitcher’s strong performance and their bats, who come alive against Ortiz.
Prediction:
The Padres win, 6-2.
