World’s golf main tournament denied permission to golfers who are interested in participating in the LIV Golf Invitational tournament, scheduled to take place next June in London.
It was recently announced that some golfers had requested permission to play in the first LIV Golf Invitational, but the PGA Tour has just announced that this will not be possible.
You may wonder, why the PGA Tour does not allow golfers to participate? Well, it seems that Australian golfer Greg Norman is trying to implement a new lucrative league that competes with the traditional tournament and commissioner Jay Monahan doesn’t agree with that, so the only way he found is to stop golfers from participating.
The LIV Golf Invitational is an event funded by Saudi Arabia and is scheduled to take place at Centurion Golf Club outside London from June 9-11 this year.
According to the program, there should be 48 players competing for $20 million dollars, with the first place winner receiving $4 million dollars and the last place winner receiving $120,000 dollars. The PGA Tour issued a brief memorandum stating its position:
“We have notified those who have applied that their request has been declined in accordance with the PGA Tour Tournament Regulations. As such, Tour members are not authorized to participate in the Saudi Golf League’s London event under our regulations.”
And it is added:
“As a membership organization, we believe this decision is in the best interest of the PGA Tour and its players.”
Norman, chief executive of LIV Golf Investments, funded mainly by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, commented in an interview on Sky Sport on Tuesday that he would have six of the world’s top 50 players at the London event.
What did the PGA Tour Commissioner say about the LIV Golf Series?
Jay Monahan, commissioner of the tournament, has already made his position clear and will not allow golfers to go to London. He was recently asked about the future of the PGA Tour, to which he replied that they will continue to put on their best efforts to organize events with the best players, fans, and world partners.
CBS’s Chris Breece interviewed golfer David Duval, who applauded Monahan’s decision.
As in everything, there will be positions for and against, but this novel has just begun, and we do not know what it will end in.
