The San Diego Padres are very close to finalizing a deal with Robinson Canó, according to a report by The Athletic’s Dennis Lin.

It is said that the Dominican’s new contract would be with MLB, and the announcement of his new team would be made as early as Saturday, May 14, according to information provided by reporter Joel Sherman.

The eight-time All Star’s arrival in San Diego would represent an important addition to the Padres. As their lineup started the 2022 campaign in very good shape, posting a record of 20 wins and 12 losses, which places them at second place in the National League West Division.

Although negotiations between the 39-year-old and the Padres are well underway, the move cannot yet be considered a reality. That’s simply because there is a long list of teams that have shown interest in giving the player a chance after he was placed on assignment by the New York Mets on May 2.

Canó’s experience could be of great help in the California locker room, and his bat would serve as a backup for the production of the organization’s main stars: Manny Machado, Eric Hosmer and Luke Voit, not to mention the team’s top player, Fernando Tatís Jr., who has not yet been able to make his debut this season due to a serious wrist injury.

Robinson Canó’s Numbers in the 2022 Season

Robinson Canó played with Dominican Republic in the Caribbean Series

Canó played just 8 games with the Mets in 2022 before being placed on assignment. He finished with a .195 average and .233 OBP, with a home run and three RBIs.

Those are very poor numbers from one of the best Latin infielders in the last 20 years of Major League Baseball. However, he seems to be in good enough physical condition to stay in the majors for at least a couple more years.

How is Robinson Canó’s Contract in 2022?

The Dominican baseball player is still waiting to collect just over $20 million of the initial 10-year, $240 million contract signed while he was with the Seattle Mariners during 2013.

In addition, it is important to note that the organization that signs the left-handed hitter during the course of the current campaign will have to pay him the Major League minimum salary, which currently stands at $700,000.
