6. Minnesota Vikings
In recent seasons, the Vikings looked far better than they do today, and they couldn’t get very far, so this raises many questions about what they can do this season to win a Super Bowl.
Despite a handful of defensive additions, head coach Kevin O’Connell will be in his first season on the job. Also, it remains to be seen what Kirk Cousins can do as the offense’s leader, especially given he has managed to win only a match in four postseasons.
5. Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jaguars appear to have learnt from their mistakes in recent seasons, opting for strategic moves over multimillionaires, indicating that Doug Pederson, the team’s new head coach, is already making an impact.
In Jacksonville, they’re hoping Pederson can help them make the most of Trevor Lawrence’s talents as well as of their first two picks in the 2022 Draft, including defensive back Travon Walker at No. 1 overall. The Jaguars are one of the NFL teams still a long way from winning a Super Bowl, but things seem to be getting better within the organization.
4. Carolina Panthers
While the Panthers filled some of the biggest vacancies on the roster during the preseason, they couldn’t solve the serious problem they have at quarterback. This is something that distances them, and a lot, from their first Super Bowl.
Last season, three QBs started for the Panthers and this season the position will be filled by Sam Darnold, who finished 2021 as the starter. Darnold can not guarantee strength in the offensive center, and Matt Corral, a third-round pick in the previous Draft, is far from being Carolina’s franchise quarterback this season.
3. Detroit Lions
For many, the big winners of the 2022 Draft were the Lions, with very important and intelligent choices, including defensive back Aidan Hutchinson as the second overall pick. However, the Detroit team is in the midst of restructuring and this season will go a long way in trying to polish and unite the great talent that head coach Dan Campbell will have at his disposal.
The ultimate test for the Lions will be trying to bolster their quarterback position with Jared Goff, who, while winning the Super Bowl with the Rams a few years ago, can’t guarantee consistency in the middle of the field.
2. Atlanta Falcons
The Falcons, like the most of the clubs on this list, are plagued with quarterback issues. After the end of an era with the departure of Matt Ryan, Atlanta acquired the services of Marcus Mariota, a quarterback with experience on the circuit but who will not have many weapons to be able to achieve much.
Desmond Ridder, third-round pick, has a chance to learn a lot from Mariota in the future, but he’ll have to do it with a lot of risk given that the Falcons’ No. 1 receiver this season is rookie Drake London.
1.- Houston Texans
Houston, we have a serious problem! Despite having one of the most talented rosters in terms of prospects, the Texans don’t project to be anywhere near contending for a postseason spot for another couple of seasons.
With the departure of Deshaun Watson, his starting quarterback will be Davis Mills, a third-round pick in the 2021 Draft, who went 2-9 last year. Lovie Smith, the next head coach, will have his job cut out for him, but in a few more years, he may be the man who prepared a club for their win.
