The Russian GP that was scheduled to take place from September 23 to 25 this year, was canceled due to the sanctions imposed on Russia for the invasion of Ukraine, and finally it was announced that it will not be replaced, so there will only be 22 races and not 23 as originally planned.
The Formula 1 announced that it has made the decision not to replace the Russian GP on this calendar, so it will not be the 2022 season that will break the record in terms of races in the highest category since it will remain at 22, as it was in the previous season.
F1 presented a statement and spread it through social networks to make the announce that the Russian GP will not be replaced:
“There will be no additional Grand Prix added to the calendar to fill the gap – meaning the 2022 calendar will run to 22 races.”
On February 25, F1, the FIA and the teams held a meeting in which they decided to eliminate the Russian GP from the calendar. However, the idea of adding a Grand Prix has been considered, since several cities that have circuits prepared for these types of events had applied to host the race.
In the end, it seems that the decision was made by the Formula 1 regulations, since the logistics had to be changed and that would affect the issue of the teams’ budget.
With the cancellation of the Russian Grand Prix for this 2022 season, the contract with this venue was also terminated, so for now it is not contemplated in the next seasons of the highest category of motorsport.
What was the Podium at the 2021 Russian GP?
In the 2021 season, the Sochi Circuit hosted the Russian GP on September 24, 25, and 26.
It was a race of 53 laps and the winner was the British driver, Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes). He was seconded on the podium by the Dutchman, Max Verstappen (Red Bull) and the Spanish, Carlos Sainz (Ferrari).
That race was historic as with his victory, Hamilton became the first driver to achieve 100 victories in Formula 1.
