Wayne Rooney already has a new club to manage; however, he will be travelling to the other side of the Atlantic Ocean as the former England striker will return to MLS to coach D.C United, the team he played for during his playing career.
The information was made public by Pablo Iglesias Maurer of The Athletic, who mentioned that both Wayne Rooney and the management of D.C. United have already agreed to terms so that Rooney becomes the new coach. The Englishman left Derby County after the club was relegated to League One in England, while the club is in a terrible financial crisis, with Rooney suggesting the team could use “new energy.”
With this, D.C. United would already have a new coach after the franchise fired Hernan Losada on April 20 after the Argentine led the club to record just six points in six games in 2022.
Wayne Rooney, 36, was spotted at Dulles-Washington International Airport in Virginia on Sunday, sparking speculation that he could be Losada’s replacement. However, Rooney will not be on the bench for the team’s next game as he is still awaiting his visa.
Wayne Rooney Already Knows What It’s Like to Manage D.C. United
Wayne Rooney is primarily remembered for his stints in England with Everton and Manchester United, but the Englishman spent some of the last few years of his career playing in MLS with D.C. United, where he played from 2018 to 2019, scoring a total of 25 goals in 52 appearances.
It will not be his first time managing the team, but it will be his first time in a full-time coaching role, as Rooney was previously a player-coach.
Now, Wayne Rooney will have the opportunity to prove his worth as coach at a club that is in a better position than Derby County, with whom he almost managed to stay in the Championship last season despite the club being deducted several points for its financial problems.
