The best players from the quarterfinals have advanced to the Wimbledon 2022 semifinals. Without defending champion Ashley Barty, there may be an unprecedented champion in this edition of the Grand Slam. Therefore, we’ll tell you who will battle for the trophy in the semifinals.

Wimbledon Semifinals 2022: Women’s Singles Preview and Predictions

Elena Rybakina vs Simona Halep

Russian-born Rybakina is currently ranked No. 23. She has impressive records of points won on first serve (72%) and break points saved (65%).

Additionally, the 23-year-old athlete has made 44 aces in the five matches she has won so far. With records of 87% of her serves won, the tennis player takes use of her height (1.84 m) to reach the quarterfinals.

On the other hand, Simona Halep is on a 12-match winning streak at Wimbledon (WTA, 2022) and is a two-time Grand Slam champion. As mentioned by the WTA, only Serena and Venus Williams have won more consecutive matches at The Championships.

She is also the first to do so since Serena won 20 matches from 2015 to 2018. Halep’s serve has been broken only seven times in five matches, and she has the highest percentage of points won on second serve (62%) of the four semifinalists.

Regarding their previous meetings, Halep leads the series 2-1. Their first meeting was two years ago and last year they met again in the third round of the US Open, where Halep won in three sets.

Rybakina is explosive and fast; however, Halep is one of the best players at defusing powerful and fast games. To win, each will need to rely on their speed and serve. By Rybakina’s impressive statistics, she may even the series in this women’s singles semifinal.

Tatjana Maria vs Ons Jabeur

This match is undoubtedly a surprise. The No. 2 player (Jabeur) in the world faces the No. 104 (Maria). If Germany’s Tatjana Maria wins the match, she will be the lowest-ranked woman to reach the Wimbledon women’s singles final. On the one side, Maria is 35 years old, has two children, and, as she moved up the charts, she beat the #5 seed, Maria Sakkari, and the #12 seed, Jelena Ostapenko.

Her game is strategic, and her shots have many slice shots that change the speed of the ball and of her opponent.

On the other hand, Jabeur is 27 years old and has won 21 of the last 23 games she has played. Out of these, she has won all of her matches on grass this season. Jabeur plays close to the net with volleys and drop shots.

The series is 2-1 in favor of Jabeur and the Tunisian player is expected to be aggressive, fast and strong. Her shots can easily dislodge Maria, and both will make surprise shots near the net.

Maria has a unique opportunity and will need to play aggressively to overcome Jabeur, who has been improving steadily and exponentially in recent years.

Since 2016, her year-end ranking has been 170, 83, 60, 60, 51, 31, 7, and now she’s ranking second. She can be the unprecedented champion if she can overcome Maria, the surprise of the tournament, and Halep, the most consistent player in this group of women.
