MLB Player of the Week July 25 – 31
MLB Player of the Week: American League – Aaron Judge
If Aaron Judge isn’t yet the American League MVP, he’s getting close. The New York Yankees outfielder earned American League Player of the Week honors for the second consecutive week thanks to another incredible performance from the batter’s box.
Judge began Monday’s game as the leader in home runs (42) and runs batted in (91) in all of the Major Leagues after totaling five home runs and 10 runs batted in, with a .348 average in six games played last week.
It’s also worth remembering that he blasted a walk-off home run in the ninth inning on Thursday, tying him with Mickey Mantle as the only players in franchise history to smash three walk-off home runs in a single season.
MLB Player of the Week: National League – Paul Goldschmidt
While Judge shined in the American League with his batting, in the National League the most outstanding performance came from the mound, specifically from Arizona Rattlers starter Merrill Kelly, who won the Player of the Week award for the first time in his career.
Living up to the contract extension he signed in the preseason with the organization, the right-hander has been one of the best pitchers in the old circuit this year, and the dominance shown last week is a true example of that.
After two 15-inning stints, Kelly allowed no runs, gave up only six hits, gave up two tickets and struck out a total of 15 opponents.
