The winners of the MLB Player of the Week award in the Major Leagues were announced on Monday, as is customary every week, this time being the most significant names in the period between June 6 and 12, 2022.
As announced by the league through its social networks, the winner in the American League was the outfielder of the Minnesota Twins, Byron Buxton, while in the National League the winner was the starter of the Cincinnati Reds, Hunter Greene .
MLB Player of the Week: American League – Byron Buxton
Outfielder Byron Buxton is proving that as long as he can be healthy, his numbers will be what the Twins are hoping for.
His recent performance, during which he hit.333 on average with seven RBIs, eight runs scored, an OPS of 1,512, and five home runs, including three games in a row with a full-round homer, earned him the Player of the Week award.
Precisely those homers also helped Buxton to continue imposing a historical record in MLB. According to Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic, after his home run on Monday against the Mariners, the speedy outfielder has added up 45 since he last hit for a double play on August 18, 2020. Of course, it’s the longest streak of this type since the twin killing began in 1920.
MLB Player of the Week: National League – Hunter Greene
Within the Cincinnati Reds’ dismal season, especially as regards their pitching staff, rookie Hunter Greene appears to be a light at the end of the tunnel for the organization.
The starter was awarded NL Player of the Week after a couple of spectacular performances last week. In 12 innings of work he struck out 15 opponents, only allowed two walks, his WHIP was 0.42 and his ERA finished at 0.75.
Greene, who this season broke the record for the most pitches over 100 MPH in a single game by throwing 39 against the Dodgers, pitched seven shutout innings against Arizona and allowed only one earned run in five innings against St. Louis.
