A new week has begun in this 2022 season of the Major Leagues, and the league gave recognition(MLB Player of the Week Award) to the players of the National League and the American League that had an outstanding performance during the last days, between May 16 and May 22.
Those chosen by the MLB were Sandy Alcántara, starter for the Miami Marlins, and Trevor Story, shortstop for the Boston Red Sox, who formed a fundamental part of the good streaks that their respective teams are currently undergoing.
MLB Player of the Week: National League – Sandy Alcántara
Sandy Alcántara had two impressive starts against direct rivals in the Eastern division of the National League, such as the Washington Nationals and the Atlanta Braves, in which he helped the Marlins to climb some positions. Altogether, Alcantara pitched a combined 17.0 innings, allowing just 9 hits and 1 run, and added a win to his career high in both starts.
During that time, opponents only hit Alcantara for.150, and he struck out 29 consecutive batters (the last 20 against Washington and the first nine against Atlanta) en route to his fourth career complete game.
MLB Player of the Week: American League—Trevor Story
During the week, on the other hand, Trevor Story showed why the Red Sox gambled on him by bringing him in from the Colorado Rockies, despite the fact that they already had a star at his position in the form of Xander Bogaerts.
During his seven games during that week, Trevor Story batted .360 with six home runs and drove in 14 runs, coming just one short of matching his record for the rest of the season prior to this positive stretch. All of this helped the Red Sox climb out of the basement of the American League East division, and they start this Tuesday with a five-game winning streak.
However, Story will have to work to maintain a level similar to this, since his previous performance has been quite disappointing, and his batting average after that incredible week now stands at just .226.
What’s next for the Marlins and the Red Sox?
The Marlins will start this new week facing the Tampa Bay Rays in an interleague duel between the two Florida franchises, and will close the week facing the Atlanta Braves again.
For its part, Boston will have a tough test as they will seek to maintain its undefeated record against the Chicago White Sox. Additionally, they will end the week in a five-game series against the Baltimore Orioles, which is the only team in its division ranked below them.
