We enter June, the third month of the season, and the Major Leagues continue to give their recognition of “MLB Player of the Week” to baseball players who had an outstanding performance in their respective leagues. This time, it is the turn of two names that belong to the new blood within the circuit.
In the American League, the award went to Yordan Álvarez of the Houston Astros, while in the National League the award went to Colorado Rockies’ player Brendan Rodgers.
MLB Player of the Week: American League – Yordan Álvarez
Yordan Álvarez of Cuba celebrated his contract extension with the Houston Astros by leading a fantastic week for the team and for himself: he now has an American League Player of the Week award to his resume.
In the batter’s box, Álvarez has been unstoppable this season, and he is one of the key reasons why the Astros are comfortably leading the American League West.
Proof of this was what was done between the week of May 30 and June 5, a period in which the batter hit for an incredible average of .560, with an OBP of .630 and an OPS of 1.217. Additionally, he hit four home runs, two of them in a game against the A’s, drove in eight runs, walked twice and struck out only once.
MLB Player of the Week: National League – Brendan Rodgers
The performance of Brendan Rodgers seems to be indirectly proportional to the one of the Colorado Rockies, since in April, when the team was playing well, he had a bad performance with the bat. Now they’re in the pit of the NL West, and he has started doing quite well.
Since May 1, Rodgers has been one of the hottest batters in all of Major League Baseball, and his performance last week proves it.
From May 30 to June 5, Rodgers hit for an average of .345, with four home runs, three of them in the same commitment, in addition to giving two doubles, driving in seven runs and negotiating four walks. These are more than enough figures to win his first Player of the Week award.
