Indigenous Peoples Forum: Climate Change at Houston Botanical Garden
At Houston’s Botanical Garden a forum will be held on Monday, October 10 from 10am to 12pm, on indigenous peoples and climate change. This will be a narrative experience in which topics like the climate situation and the spiritual connection that indigenous groups have with the land will take place.
As mentioned by the Botanical Garden, “through this forum, panelists and attendees will examine the impact the climate crisis is having on indigenous peoples groups and their communities, and they will propose ways to change current bahaviours to show understanding about what being part of the Earth means, as well as an understanding of what it means to be beneficial components of the environment.”
Admission is $15.
Indigenous Peoples’ Day Celebration
On Sunday, October 9 from 12pm to 4pm at the Armand Bayou Nature Center and the Houston American Indian Center a celebration of indigenous peoples will be hosted. This is a recognition over the indigenous heritage of the land through social activities.
Activities will feature live demonstrations, local sales, demonstrations of Akokisa tool replicas, native plants and wildlife, and an interpretive talk on coastal grasslands’ ecology throughout the day.
Admission starts at $4 for children and seniors, and $6 for adults.
Visiting the pre-Columbian art exhibition
Also, at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston an exhibition will be held from November 6 of this year until April 16, 2023 in which Colombian indigenous art in gold will be on display. The exhibition is called Golden World: The Portable Universe of Indigenous Colombia.
There will be approximately 400 works of pre-Columbian culture, created before the arrival of Europeans. The pieces include necklaces, masks, breastplates, effigies and textiles in gold or ceramic. The Museum of Fine Arts’ echibition in Houston also includes landscape recreations, archaeological sites and collaborations that add context to the objects themselves.
Learning bird gardening at the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center
In addition, the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center will hold a wild bird gardening event on October 8 from 10:30am to 12:30pm. This workshop focuses on caring for one’s garden in such a way that it attracts birds of all kinds, including owls.
This will be a class in which bird-friendly gardening tips will be given for all types and bird species. Additionally, a detailed list of Houston native plants that attract birds along with their cultivation information will be provided. This activity is perfect because it allows us to recognize species of fauna and flora, which are so important for the indigenous communities.
Black Heritage Festival at Emancipation Park
Finally, we invite you to the Black Heritage Festival at Emancipation Park. This promises to be a celebration of Houston’s African American community with a gathering of artists, guest speakers, poets and artisans during the weekend.
There will be performances by DJ Elevated, Elle Varner, Eric Benét and Ruben Moreno & Zydeco Re-Evolution. Without a doubt, it will be an incredible event to commemorate diversity in the country.
