Brandon Moreno: A Tijuana Warrior
Born in Tijuana, Baja California, Brandon Moreno spent his childhood between games and school. He also helped in the making and selling of piñatas, which was the family business.
The current UFC 125-pound champion participated in the elaboration of piñatas, the decoration of the sticks and even in the design of some models.
Piñatería has always been important in Brandon Moreno’s life, but perhaps the moment in which it took more relevance was in 2018.
During August 5, 2017 and May 19, 2018, Brandon Moreno had what has so far been the worst time of his UFC fighting career. During this period, the Tijuana native suffered two defeats, the first against American Sergio Pettis and the second at the hands of Alexandre Pantoja. These back-to-back falls nearly took him out of the UFC.
And as if this was not enough, in September 2018 his daughter Megan was born, who with the passing of the months was developing ganglions in the stomach that needed to be operated.
With his daughter sick, not much money and two losses, the world was coming down on Brandon Moreno, but his family did not abandon him.
His parents, thanks to the profits from the piñatería, lent him the money he needed to perform surgery on his daughter. Grateful to God and his parents, he vowed that the UFC world would know who Brandon Moreno is.
Who Is Brandon Moreno in the UFC World?
Brandon Moreno’s beginnings in the world of martial arts date back to Tijuana when, at the age of 12, he wanted to practice a sport that would help him stay in shape.
His mother, always attentive, took him to a local gym named Entram Gym, where he began practising mixed martial arts.
At the age of 17, Brandon Moreno makes his debut in the world of professional fights in Tijuana, his hometown, and defeats American Atiq Jihad by submission.
In a period of 2 years and almost three months, Brandon Moreno accumulates a record of 6 wins and 3 losses, a record that led him to fight in the World Fighting Federation.
On June 12, 2021, with a record of 18 wins, 5 losses and 2 draws he faces Deiveson Figueiredo whom he defeated by submission in the third round. Thus becoming the UFC Flyweight champion, the first Mexican to achieve this feat.
On January 22, 2022, now with a record of 19 wins, 6 losses and 2 draws, Brandon Moreno faces again the Brazilian Deiveson Figueiredo, to whom he loses by unanimous decision. Thus losing the UFC Flyweight Championship.
This setback did not discourage Brandon Moreno, who with his daughter’s illness and economic problems knew what it meant to hit rock bottom, so he took this defeat as one more mark in his career that would not defeat him definitively. Soon the UFC world would once again know who Brandon Moreno is.
On July 31, 2022, the Tijuana native became UFC champion once again by defeating Kai Kara-France. The bout was decided by knockout in favor of Moreno after he landed a withering kick to the body.
This victory allowed Brandon Moreno to regain the UFC Flyweight Championship, this time on an interim basis. The reason he did not directly face Deiveson Figueiredo is that Figueiredo is recovering from an injury.
The victory over Kai Kara-France will allow Brandon Moreno to have a new fight against Deiveson Figueiredo, the current champion of the division, who as we have already mentioned, is recovering from an injury.
