After several tense days due to a controversial clause in the contract extension signed by Kyler Murray with the Cardinals, this Wednesday the Arizona organization decided to remove the clause from the agreement with the quarterback.
According to a statement from the team, they decided to remove the “independent study” requirement from Murray’s contract. This clause required him to study game material four hours per week, in addition to those dedicated to collective training, with the mission of preparing for their seasonal games.
After seeing the distraction it created, we removed the addendum from the contract. It was clearly perceived in ways we never intended. Our confidence in Kyler Murray is as high as it’s ever been, and nothing demonstrates our belief in his ability to lead this team more than the commitment reflected in this contract.”
Team statement according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Last week, Kyler Murray, who is about to turn 25 years old, finally signed a contract extension for five seasons and $230.5 million after a complicated preseason in which both parties had differences over the path the negotiation was taking.
Kyler Murray Did Not Keep Quiet
Kyler Murray gave an impromptu press conference Thursday, hours before the Cardinals announced the clause’s removal, to defend himself against reports that the Arizona organization included the condition in the contract due to concerns about his preparation.
To think that I can accomplish everything I’ve accomplished and not be a student of the game and not have that passion and not take it serious, it’s disrespectful and almost a joke. I’m honestly flattered that you all think I can go out there and not prepare for the game and not take it seriously.
It’s disrespectful to my peers, to all the great athletes in this league. This game is too hard. Playing in the position I play in this league is too difficult.
Kyler Murray on his preparation to play
The quarterback was the first overall pick of the 2019 Draft and that same season was awarded the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year. However, after a promising start in 2022, the Cardinals’ season ended with a horrible loss for the NFC Wild Card, raising many doubts about Murray’s ability to lead the team to a Super Bowl.
