The CEO of the ATP, Andrea Gaudenzi, pronounced himself on the unfortunate incidents that have occurred recently between players and referees.
“The first three months of the season have seen an unusual frequency of high-profile incidents involving unsportsmanlike conduct,” Gaudenzi said via a statement that was sent to tennis players, ahead of the remainder of the 2022 professional tennis season.
The Italian leader added: “The first three months of the season have seen an unusual frequency of high-profile incidents involving unsportsmanlike conduct. These incidents shine a bad light on our sport. This conduct affects everyone, and sends the wrong message to our fans, especially young fans.”
Notice from the ATP that is aimed at players like Nick Kyrgios, who is constantly involved in unfortunate incidents with umpires, players and fans.
From now on, it is clear that sanctions will be harsher for tennis players who show a violent attitude during matches, especially those that are part of Masters 1000 or Grand Slams events.
ATP Ranking after the First Quarter of 2022
After the Australian Open and the first two Masters 1000 events (Indian Wells and Miami Open) of the season, there have been some interesting changes in the ATP rankings.
In the first week of April, Novak Djokovic appears as world number one despite playing only one tournament so far this year. The Serb leads Daniil Medvedev by just 10 points, and that gap should widen in the coming weeks with the Russian out for surgery.
The Top 5 in the men’s rankings is completed by Germany’s Alexander Zverev, Spain’s Rafael Nadal and Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas.
While the tennis players occupying the sixth to tenth place in the Top 10 are: Matteo Berrettini, Casper Ruud, Andrey Rublev, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Cameron Norrie.
